Similar Kind - "Maria"

Similar Kind - "Maria"

Words by Zach Romano.

Norwalk, CT’s Similar Kind just shared their latest tune earlier this week, a shimmering new single called “Maria.” The song revolves around losing yourself in a helpless, involuntary fixation on someone who you probably shouldn’t have feelings for, or who at the very least is barely aware you’re in the room: “Why can’t I breathe around ya? I don’t know me around ya, Maria…if I can even call you that,” sings frontwoman Julia Breen.

The music itself amplifies the almost dreamlike quality of giving oneself over to an irrational obsession. The song's intro reads like Phoenix’s “Too Young” as heard through a 3 a.m. gauze, and it gives way to an infectious melody where Breen’s soaring vocals and high-register bass fills float above a bed of guitar and synthesizer that recall Nocturne-era Wild Nothing. The unison hits that end the verses and vocal doo-doo-doo-da-doos in the song’s bridge heighten the sense of cyclically losing and barely regaining control of yourself.

You can listen to “Maria” on your streaming platform of choice. The song is also available for digital download via Bandcamp. Follow the band on Instagram and like them on Facebook!
