Jenny Kern - "Run"

Jenny Kern - "Run"

The sparse piano intro on “Run,” the latest single from New York City’s Jenny Kern, immediately sets a serious, emotional tone. A throbbing, heartbeat-like beat kicks in shortly thereafter, arriving right around the time that Kern makes mention of her own heart, effectively foreshadowing the direction that the song is headed in. Amongst a rueful-sounding backdrop of robust synths and assertive electronic drums, Kern grapples with relationship dynamics through the lyrics, first turning her focus outward, but then engaging in a more personal, internal self-assessment. Initially, her words analyze the shortcomings of a failed relationship, but then confront the fear of loneliness and self-doubt. She breathlessly sings “I don’t want to lose you now, we’ve only just begun. I won’t be the one to run” in the chorus, and as a result of her shift in focus, this series of lines takes on new meaning as the song progresses. These nice little lyrical touches, combined with the track’s refined instrumentation, make “Run” a slick, captivating pop-tune that’ll surely grab your attention.
