Best Hit TV - "Two Bad Neighbors"
If you enjoy indie rock in a broad sense, then you’ll love Best Hit TV. The Jersey City-based trio really does an incredible job synthesizing so many classic influences into their palatable sound, and they’re clearly disciples of the very best that the genre has to offer. Their songs have the expansive and atmospheric guitar swirl of Yo La Tengo, the poppy space-age synths of Stereolab, and yes, a bit of a gauzy shoegaze sheen, so, take your pick from heavy hitters like My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive for the third band in this series of comparisons. “Two Bad Neighbors,” a song that appears on their most recent full length, Being Emotionally Manipulative Isn’t Very Punk Rock Of You, is a great example of how the trio stitches these sonic threads together. Its melody is soothing and languid, buttressed by vintage-sounding synths and Elaine Rasnake’s soft voice. There’s also plenty of guitar fuzz to supplement that, which makes the Yo La Tengo comparison pretty apt, as it has all of the necessary elements heard on many of their classics. The song definitely wouldn’t sound out of place on Electr-o-pura.
The trio recently shared a video for the track, which is cool and old-timey looking. That characterization makes sense, as after writing it, I read the description and it turns out it’s made up of edited clips from the silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune by George Méliès. Excellent!!
