Milly - "Wish Goes On"
Los Angeles’ Milly were one of our favorite discoveries of 2020 and they’re carrying that distinction into 2021. Following the release of three great singles in “Star Thistle Blossom,” “Denial,” and “Birds Fly Free,” the young four-piece is supplementing them with an additional two tracks to make up their second EP, Wish Goes On, which is out today.
The EP opens with the slow guitar twinkle of “Star Spangled Banner,” and his references to the 4th of July definitely help conjure images of a scorching summer’s day that’s moving at a snail’s pace. “Denial” is similarly toned down with intermittent bursts of fuzz, while “Star Thistle Blossom” has a sludgy, glacial guitar sound that coincides with an uptick in tempo, thus acting as a nice climactic arc before the comedown of “Teach Old Dog New Tricks” kicks in. Though the penultimate track chugs along in the beginnings, it gains steam towards the end, as the guitars swell to a breaking point. The final track, “Birds Fly Free,” has a similarly subdued opening and follows a comparable trajectory, as the band works in plenty of crunchy riffs and explores some powerful loud-quiet dynamics, particularly utilizing this technique to perfection around three-quarters of the way through the track’s duration.
You can purchase Wish Goes On via Dangerbird Records. The EP is also available on all streaming platforms. Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
