Griffin Jennings - "Ceremony"
New York City’s Griffin Jennings decided to roll with the punches in 2020. After a steady stream of freelance work scoring films suddenly dried up at the onset of the pandemic, he hunkered down, shifted his focus, and built his very own home studio. In addition to working with several talented local artists in this new space (including one of our favorites, Awksymoron), he also recorded two albums of his own. Earlier this month, he shared “Ceremony,” the second single from the first of these two full-lengths, Static and the Dark.
“Ceremony” has the sound of an artist finding his voice and coming into his own. Opening with revving guitars and resonant cymbal crashes, the track takes on an elevated emotional tenor in the first verse, as Jennings describes a relationship that’s falling apart. Consistent with the intense nature of such incidents, he keeps the energy levels elevated throughout the song, working in a lightning-fast (and super gnarly) guitar solo and some light flourishes of what sounds like a marimba to counterbalance this guitar ferocity. These little taps of twinkling percussion slowly work their way to the forefront and gently float the song to a soft conclusion.
