The Bottom Dollars - "Hint!"
We’re excited to premiere the video for “Hint!” from Brooklyn’s The Bottom Dollars. The song and accompanying video both dabble in the bizarre and surreal, pairing hypnotic instrumentation with some Lynch-ian visuals. The eerie sounding track is steered by an oscillating guitar riff that mirrors a game show wheel and peppered with a short chorus that plays a huge role in crafting the video’s narrative.
The video, which was directed by Tasha Lutek, imagines a dark and disjointed game show hosted by the band’s keyboardist Sean Spada. Throughout the video, Spada makes futile attempts to connect with the show’s contestants, and his failure to do so eventually drives him mad. He reaches a breaking point during the song’s chorus, as each time frontman Brian Cherchiglia repeats the line “I can’t take a hint,” Spada appears to lose a step, unraveling with each utterance. The video then transitions to a revenge fantasy of sorts, where the host imagines himself destroying the game show set, but thankfully, things work out in the end. Spada emerges from inside his own mind to receive the crucial “Hint!” from the final contestant, much to the delight of the audience. At this point, the song makes a dramatic sonic shift, as its characteristic circular riff is replaced by some modular synths, provided by Matt Lange (DeadMau5). In creating this narrative and deftly pairing it with the song’s sonic structure, Lutek shows “that our connections with one another are more important than the facades we often work so hard to cultivate.”
