Mothra Stewart - "The Marathon"
Look At My Records is excited to premiere the brand new video for “The Marathon” by Mothra Stewart. The New York City-based project of songwriter Marc Lefevre has roots in Austin, TX, but has called Greenwich Village home since the mid-2010s. After settling down in the Big Apple, Lefevre started his own imprint called Green Witch Recordings, which, in addition to Mothra Stewart, boasts a series of great releases from Chill Russell, Teen Idle, Lauren Lakis, and more.
On “The Marathon,” Lefevre builds off of the lo-fi soundscapes found on his last EP, The Times They Al a-Changing, by drawing structural inspiration from several sources of indie rock canon like the Pixies and Modest Mouse, while also adding a distinct post-rock undertone. The track features layers of billowing, psych smeared guitars, and opens with a wall of ethereal haze that’s flush with reverb. Lefevre's vocals oscillate from buried and echoing to pronounced and distinct, as he channels the idiosyncratic melodies of Isaac Brock at times, before ultimately returning to weave in and out of some dense guitar work.
The accompanying video is equally dreamy and artfully obscured, as it centers on simple figures that supplement the song’s hazy vibe. The technicolor video begins with the silhouette of a runner as the primary focus. This lone silhouette eventually morphs into two, before the scene transitions to more clearly defined running figures, just as the song’s melody makes the aforementioned dramatic shift. This time, they’re not only running, but leapfrogging, jumping, and fighting. The focus of the video eventually transitions back to the original silhouettes, coming full-circle to a marathon-like conclusion.
