Tagcloud - "Movement Edits"
If you’re interested in hearing some deeper, more experimental bedroom recordings, look no further than Tag Cloud, the project of Brooklyn songwriter Justin Mayfield. His latest collection of songs, Movement Edits, dropped today and it’s a stellar follow up to the breezy compositions heard on his 2019 effort, Solarwhipped. On Movement Edits, Mayfield serves up some enchanting and expansive one-man recordings - the kinds that sound so vast that it’s hard to believe they’re the product of just a single individual.
Mayfield channels an array of moods on Movement Edits, from the more whimsical “Overwave” to the more relaxed and reflective “We Just Stare At The Walls.” Many of the songs have an experimental folk aura with delicate guitar riffs and finger-picking that’s accentuated by various surrounding sounds and samples, including chimes, muffled spoken word pieces, and auxiliary percussion elements. Overall, the songs feel meditative and contemplative with locked-in electro-beat grooves. They’re a lovely summertime companion to the hum of your bedroom air conditioner on a hot day. Despite the endless amount of free time during the course of the last five months, Mayfield smartly avoids any overproduction missteps, instead opting for a raw and natural sound by limiting takes and not over complicating the arrangements.
