HALAN - "Best Intentions" EP
We’re excited to premiere Best Intentions, the debut release from Los Angeles based musician HALAN. The luscious four-track EP is dark and melancholic with an overarching concept of sorts, as HALAN directly addresses a different former romantic partner on each song. As you can imagine, dissecting past relationships and revisiting the array of feelings sparked by former flames can be an emotionally challenging, but highly therapeutic process. HALAN grapples with these raw emotions against a series of gloomy electro-pop soundscapes, showcasing her towering vocals and ability to manipulate trip-hop styled beats as a healing mechanism.
Some splashy and crunchy sounding beats buttress a dense piano to open the EP’s first track, “I Don’t Know You,” as HALAN describes a fleeting romance with a piercing, highly emotive vocal delivery that’s complemented by flurries of backing vocals. The album’s title track and lead single, “Best Intentions,” once again centers on HALAN’s distinctive voice with percussive-like backing vocal layers, as she confronts and overcomes the manipulative behavior of an ex with little reservation. A persistent, ominous beat characterizes “Can’t Keep You,” a song about the personal strife that accompanies unrequited, long-distance love, and the mood remains jet black for the ghostly, seductive sounds of the final track, “You Did Right.”
