Baby & Dynamite - "Dead Fred"

Baby & Dynamite - "Dead Fred"

We’re excited to premiere “Dead Fred,” the brand new track from Baby & Dynamite, the collaborative goth-electronic project of Cammy Baby and Johnny Dynamite of Whiner. The project’s origins date back to 2018, when Dynamite shared a beat with Cam, who immediately laid down some of his trademark haunting vocals. Their first ever song, “Gold Tooth,” was born, and on the same day they recorded a second track, “U Want 2 Wash Away.” This fruitful side project continued to blossom throughout 2018, as in our interview for Bushwick Daily last year, Dynamite shared that the two met up every Friday to write and record their 19-track debut mixtape, A Harrowing Account. By early 2020, Baby and Dynamite had already amassed an additional batch of unreleased songs, and today, they’re sharing their first new music in over a year, a pummeling, powerful track called “Dead Fred.”

As the title alludes to, “Dead Fred” delves into the raw feelings of grief and pain that stem from losing a loved one. The lyrics, which Baby penned after losing a friend to an accidental overdose, particularly expound on the feelings of disbelief that accompany grief, particularly focusing on how an individual who was such a “ray of sunlight” could be extinguished so suddenly. Over an infectious, dazzling beat, the song’s mood wavers between dark and bright, with creeping riffs in the early stages that eventually give way to more spritely synths and a commanding outro, where Baby sings into the ether “you were a ray,” as if to project that his friend’s spirit and love continues to live on.

“Dead Fred” is the lead single off of Baby & Dynamite’s forthcoming mixtape Guaranteed to Chill Your Blood Volume One, which is the first in a trilogy of mixtapes.
