DD Island - "Get High"
We’re excited to premiere “Get High,” the latest track from Nashville’s DD Island. It’s the lead single from their forthcoming debut EP, Scaphoid, which is set for release on April 16th. Brandon Rhodes, the songwriter behind the project, began writing songs for the EP after a skateboarding accident in the summer of 2019 left him with a broken wrist. He pushed forward and rebounded from the injury unfazed, as after healing, Rhodes took this fresh batch of high-energy tunes on the road as a one-man-band. That’s right! While playing guitar and singing, Rhodes used his left foot to play a hi-hat cymbal and his right foot to play a kick drum. The unique experience helped him fine-tune and hone in on an absolutely perfect, blissed-out sound that combines elements of garage, punk, and lo-fi pop.
Rhodes serves up a hearty helping of guitar fuzz on “Get High” for a track that sounds simultaneously gritty, charming, and explosive. He builds the song off of a slingshot rhythm, letting some scuzzy guitars and sprightly riffs bounce all over the place, while he litters the hammering beat with frenzied fills. His sun-bleached melodies have a scrappy edge to them, as Rhodes quite emotively sings about the lengths we go to escape ourselves and the false promises that we make along the way, which particularly resonates when he sings: “let’s all go back to my place, forget about the time we said that you did what you did and I do those things that you say.” We’ve all been there before.
