Two-Man Giant Squid - "Versechorus"
Two-Man Giant Squid write songs that are equal parts anthemic and fuzzy. Their music is steeped in guitar distortion and melodic firepower. It’s hard not to sing along. Frontman and principal songwriter Mitchell Vinokur has the presence of a Paul Westerberg or a Craig Finn… with more guitar pedals. Like those luminaries, there’s real soul and substance to his worn-in words and impassioned guitar playing, which in turn, makes his songwriting quite memorable.
The Brooklyn band’s latest single, “Versechorus,” is a little lighter on the guitars at times, but there’s no shortage of absolute, rip-roaring mayhem. In what seems to be a subtle dig at the sometimes constricting and monotonous nature of traditional songwriting structures, Vinkour manically repeats the titular phrase throughout, taking some breaks to catch his breath or inject some tongue-in-cheek spoken word phrases like “wait, I forgot how to play it” and “uh, I’ll probably just write a bridge.” The added guitar chaos towards the end and the extra reverb on the vocals at the midpoint make “Versechorus” feel particularly Oh Sees-esque. So, get ready for a wild listen.
