DD Island - "Future Days"
DD Island specializes in crafting uber-catchy lo-fi tunes. His 2021 EP, Schaphoid, was heavy on the kind of sun-burnt guitars that’ll stay stuck in your head for days on end. Brandon Rhodes, the songwriter behind the project, opted for a raw, scorched earth production style for his first batch of tunes with excellent results. The five songs on Schaphoid benefit from that level of fidelity, with the melodies drawing strength from the fuzziness of Rhodes’ muscular, but bouncy guitars. Today, Rhodes is sharing his first new music in over a year, a new song called “Future Days.” It represents a bit of an evolution in style, signaling what’s to come for the now New York City-based artist.
“Future Days” sees Rhodes leaning into some more psychedelic tendencies. The song is more trippy feeling than anything he’s released previously, with gooey guitars that swirl into his vocals, as he sings of “dancing in the clouds above” and understanding “where the darkness dwells.” Though it’s guitar-centric, the song’s other elements also shine. The drumming is particularly super tight and his vocals also morph, transform, and soar throughout.
In a press release, Rhodes shared a bit about the relatively seamless process of writing “Future Days.” While riding his bike to work one summer day, the song came to him in its entirety. “Thanks to bilateral stimulation,” says Rhodes. “It floated around in my head for a couple of months, until I finally sat down and got it onto tape over quarantine. It had been a Can-heavy summer for me, thus the track’s title. I thought of Sunflower Bean’s track, ‘Tame Impala,’ and Tame Impala’s track ‘Led Zeppelin.’ I thought I’d continue the legacy by dedicating the song to my favorite Can record, Future Days.”
DD Island shared a cool visualizer to accompany “Future Days,” which you can watch below.
“Future Days” will appear on DD Island’s forthcoming second EP, Cherry Tounge, which is set for release on May 6th. The song officially drops tomorrow, so swing over to Spotify and Bandcamp then.
