Endearments - "Too Late"
There’s no stopping Endearments. Kevin Marksson, the seasoned songwriter behind the project, has been churning out hit after hit of lush dream pop bangers over the last year, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down as we approach the summer months of 2022. Today, we’re excited to premiere the band’s latest offering, a devastating, yet gorgeous, ode to a broken heart titled “Too Late.”
Marksson grapples with several difficult truths on “Too Late,” as he engages in a pointed and gripping dissection of those moments when a romantic relationship takes a turn for the worse. He hits that sweet spot of lyrical introspection and dance floor anthem, giving serious nods to 80s pop while still unwavering in the content of his messaging. Against a sonic palette of glossy synthesizers and ringing guitar riffs, Marksson channels his frustrations, singing “Fuck your excuses. I can’t give you more of what I don’t contain,” but his feelings later morph to acceptance: “It’s too late to start. That is not the way to love me.” The song was recorded entirely to tape by Marksson, which definitely adds an additional layer of regretful longing, but despite these themes, the track’s mood still thrives off of its deep grooves, giving it a more of a “Dance Yrself Clean” sentiment rather than conjuring feelings of wallowing in despair or heartache.
