Nox Boys - "My Umbrella"
Pittsburgh rock and roll outfit Nox Boys bring a lot of energy and melody to their songs. The band’s 2019 full-length, Out of Touch, was jam-packed with lots of up-tempo and ear wormy numbers, with the quartet showcasing their skills at channeling the spirit of archetypal garage rock acts like The Sonics and The Flaming Groovies. Today, while in midst of a Spanish tour, they’re releasing their first new music since then, a spritely, clean-toned track called “My Umbrella.
“My Umbrella” is a sweet love song that hinges on a clever metaphor likening the object of your affection to a protector of sorts. “Let me tell you bout my girl, my umbrella,” frontman Zack Keim sings to kick things off, “let me dedicate my world to my sweet novella. She keeps me dry at night, sometimes warm from the cold., Keep me hanging on tight.” In keeping with the affectionate lyrical theme, the song rests on a mostly polished-sounding instrumental foundation that’s guided by several starts and stops in the action, which seem designed to add emphasis to the chorus. The quartet makes ample use of a bouncy organ and their guitars don’t heap on the fuzz like you’d expect from your run-of-the-mill garage rock band. Rather, the Nox Boys are far from scrappy. Instead, everything is rhythmically tight and the veteran of the group, slide guitarist Bob Powers, makes his presence known, especially in the choruses.
