Songwriter Julius Bowditch, who performs under the moniker Jupie, has been a bit transient over the last few years. After finishing school in the early days of the pandemic, he moved back to his hometown of Baltimore from Chicago. This preceded a couple of moves to New York and back the following year, and with all of these changes came a batch of new songs. Today, we’re excited to premiere the album, Brick Hill, in its entirety along with a special video for “Circle Falls” and “It Was A Thursday.”

The return to his hometown resulted in an intense period of self-reflection and a resulting change in worldview, which Bowditch explores in depth on Brick Hill. Songs like “Circle Falls” are tacitly contemplative, teasing out the intricacies of how the past can interact with the present, especially in distantly familiar settings. Similarly, the record’s titular track, “Brick Hill,” is gentle and lush, triggering flows of nostalgia and examining the impact of the passage of time. Throughout the record’s eight songs, Jupie specifically explores “home” as a concept beyond just a stationary space. He shared, “[t]hrough this process, I began to see my record as a form of ‘home.’ This notion of relationships as home recurs throughout the record. There are conversations about love and loss, the ephemeral nature of the moment, and the power of memory.”

The video for “Circle Falls” and “It Was A Thursday” features animation from Peggy Fussell and includes deeply intimate imagery of a distinctly “Baltimore” oriole and other familiar, homely settings. “Circle Falls” transitions nicely into “It Was A Thursday,” as following the former’s explosive ending, the latter picks up with a poem from Jupie’s sister Lyric. She recites the poem against a backdrop of light omnichord and bird sounds.
