Glimmer - “Self Destroyed”

Glimmer - “Self Destroyed”

We’re in the midst of another shoegaze revival. At least that’s what I’ve been reading. I tend to think we’ve been living through one for more than a decade (just ask Winter, Blushing, and A Sunny Day In Glasgow ), but the folks who get paid to write about music think we’re in the throes of a new peak in the 40-year life span of the genre. I’ll take their word for it.

Revival or not, Glimmer is a new band of note on the New York City scene that fits within the parameters. Their sound can be categorized as shoegaze, but damn, they’re heavier than most. Their latest single, “Self-Destroyed,” is a sonic assault to the senses… in a good way. The opening moments are deceptively mellow, but things get weighty as soon as the barrage of tuned-down guitars kick in. Glimmer utilizes a loud-quiet dynamic to their advantage, subduing the guitars during portions of the verses, but the choruses are the song’s heaviest moments.
