Dancer - “Passionate Sunday”

Dancer - “Passionate Sunday”

Spanish imprint Meritorio Records is known for giving a home to some of the best indie pop out there. Over the last half dozen years, they’ve released some stellar, jangle-heavy records from a lot of my favorite North American bands, including The Seams, Smokescreens, and Slack Times. They even released a pair from Brooklyn’s favorite sons, Holy Tunics. But the label’s latest release from the band Dancer is a bit of a departure from their classic modus operandi in that it’s not jangly at all. Instead, the Glasweigian quartet’s sound is quirkier and influenced by art rock. It’s idiosyncrasies are laid out for all to see on their brand-new single, “Passionate Sunday.”

Dancer’s music is rhythmic and emphasizes the lower frequencies. The bassline drives “Passionate Sunday,” tensely jouncing up and down the fretboard while frontperson Gemma Fleet utilizes a hybrid sing-speak vocal delivery reminiscent of Lesley Woods of Au Pairs and Florence Shaw of Dry Cleaning. Dissonant guitars also make their mark, sounding at times like a cacophonous siren.
