The Pretty Flowers - "Police Me"
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: just because a song winds up on the cutting room floor during an album session, that doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of seeing the light of day. Time and time again, we’ve seen great bands pick these B-sides up from off the ground, especially in our modern-day, never-ending release cycle climate. Los Angeles’ indie rockers The Pretty Flowers found themselves in this exact situation with their latest single, “Police Me.” According to their own account, the track just didn’t fit on their 2023 full-length, A Company Sleeve, yet as a stand-alone tune, they felt it too good not to share. We’re grateful they did.
The Pretty Flowers mix a series of late 20th-century alternative rock genres into their sound, including college rock, jangle pop, and power pop. “Police Me” stands as a prime example of their smooth blend, as it evokes similar vibes to Miracle Legion, R.E.M., and the Posies, all in a concise two minutes and forty-five seconds. The song features delectable guitar hooks, catchy verses, and an earworm-y chorus where they defiantly proclaim “don’t police me, I can police myself.”
