don’t get lemon - “Have Some Shame”

I’m always on the hunt for contemporary goth-adjacent tunes that can hold water to the classics. Austin’s don’t get lemon are a group that can do just that, and then some. On their latest full-length, Have Some Shame, the quartet expertly synthesizes the dark energies of legendary acts like Orchestral Movements In The Dark, Echo and The Bunnymen, and Depeche Mode.  Their sound is mostly upbeat, but like those aforementioned classic acts, it has a sinister-sounding hue that’s accentuated by some eerie lyrical themes. The record’s eponymous track, “Have Some Shame,” sees these elements in perfect synthesis.

“Have Some Shame” is a mostly moody commencement, but it has moments that solidify it as a dark dance floor anthem. The chorus sees a surge in energy, where the electro-beats drop in heavy and the synths rise in intensity. The band describes their sound as “heatwave,” and on “Have Some Shame, " their combination of dark driving rhythms and sizzling keys make it an apt genre descriptor.
