Silverware - “No Expectations”
Last month, Silverware unveiled “No Expectations,” the second single from their forthcoming sophomore full-length, One True Light. The project of Bay Area songwriter Ainsley Wagoner has existed in different iterations for more than a decade and is seemingly taking on a new identity with this release. In contrast to her stunning debut, No Plans, which was recorded quickly to tape at San Francisco’s legendary Tiny Telephone, Wagoner saw the benefit in taking her time in making One True Light. Misreading of rushing through the process, Wagoner and producer Omar painstakingly poured over each and every detail. “No Expectations” is an example of the benefits of fine-tuning minutiae and allowing ideas to marinate.
The piano-led “No Expectations” is flush with bright sonic textures and diverse aural flavors. Wagoner’s gorgeous voice anchors the track and remains a constant beacon, but the aforementioned attention to detail is apparent, as her singing doesn’t overpower some of the other stunning elements. These include, but are not limited to, the song’s striking rhythm, which is punctuated by a hard snare, playful gang-styled backing vocals at the tail-end, and precisely injected guitar riffs.
