Mo Dotti - “whirling sad”

Mo Dotti - “whirling sad”

Mo Dotti are one of shoegaze’s most original bands. That’s something that’s hard to achieve in a genre that at times can seem formulaic and trite. But on their latest release, Opaque, the Los Angeles quintet continued their trend of sonic exploration, traversing more into ethereal noisiness and pools of reverberated guitars. While many of their genre contemporaries fall into the trappings of imitation, Mo Dotti succeeds in crafting something much more fresh, invigorating, and original, thanks in large part to their commitment to crafting striking melodies.

“whirling sad” is gorgeously dense and layered, with fuzzy guitars that delicately dance around front person Gina Negrini angelic vocals.  In the verses, her voice sits slightly above the mix, but then retreats to a more even setting in the chorus. The tinges of psychedelia make the track even more kaleidoscopic, particularly the omnipresent harmonics in the song’s latter half. Those harmonies, and Negrini’s striking lead vocals, are the asset that sets Mo Dotti apart.
