Hanford Reach - "Out Of Dreams"
Words by Zach Romano
“Out of Dreams,” is the second single from Brooklyn duo Hanford Reach’s upcoming debut full-length After Image. Sounding something like a Tame Impala track written after Kevin Parker forgot to take his anxiety pills, “Out of Dreams” is a bracing, jagged journey that will leave you exhilarated and maybe a bit dizzy.
The track leads in with a brassy synth line and gets going after the drums almost immediately crash in. There are definite psych elements here, but not of the soothing or lulling variety: everything is calculatedly a bit off-kilter as the mix vamps between speakers, and it can be difficult to find a footing or know where your ears should be at any given moment. That said, there is a definite groove that all of the elements fit into, and a couple of well-placed breaks give the listener a breather before the whirlwind drops back in. “Out of Dreams” is drum-driven in a way I didn’t expect from a duo; it has a big, booming groove that seems like a blast to play. Once you allow yourself to be swept up in Hanford Reach’s world, “Out of Dreams” you'll find some surprising hooks, too.
