Silver Movie - "Jackson Pollock's House"

Matt Ray, the songwriter behind Silver Movie, is a New York transplant who fled the Big Apple for the sunnier skies of Los Angeles. Since relocating out west in 2019, Ray turned his focus towards crafting a vibrant brand of indie-folk music that sounds very much inspired by the ghosts of his current home city’s legendary Laurel Canyon scene. Silver Movie’s first single, “Jackson Pollock’s House,” definitely basks in the healing glow of sun-warped psychedelic folk. It’s soothing and languid, as Ray buttresses his warm, slightly buzzing guitars with an effortless sounding piano and an additional layer of acoustics to round out the song’s pearly sonics. It’s the lead single from Silver Movie’s forthcoming debut, Youth Revue, and the songs on the album represent what Ray describes as a bit of a turning point in his life. He shared the following background on the record:

The years leading up to my move had felt like a dark forest full of wrong turns, trap doors, and funhouse mirrors. By the time I got to LA I was exhausted and at the mercy of my own anxiety. I was kind of losing my mind. Fortunately late that summer I got back into writing songs and read about Kintsugi- The Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals. I was enamored with the idea of embracing imperfections instead of hiding them, and felt that similar repairs were needed in my own life. This concept proved to be an inspiration for my songwriting and ended up having a big influence on the album's production. Shortly before recording began I wrote the "Sonic Kintsugi" manifesto which explained everything I was trying to achieve on the album. I basically wanted to deliberately "break" songs and put them back together. I sent the manifesto to a number of musicians involved and though I'm not sure that everyone read it, we ended up making a pretty solid record. I named the album Youth Revue because I wanted the sequencing to move like acts in a play, loosely inspired by experiences in my own life."

Ray also shared a dreamy, vintage-looking video for the track, which was directed by Laura Lynn Petrick and features performances from Ray himself, Allyson Yarrow Pierce, and Rhonda Pell. You can stream it below!
