brz - "Paradise"
We’re thrilled to premiere the brand new video for “Paradise” from Brooklyn musician brz (pronounced Breeze). “Paradise” is the latest single from this dynamic hip-hop artist - it follows his powerful August single “Would You Eat Your Heart Out?” and his excellent May EP, Your Favorite Abstraction.
Written during quarantine, “Paradise” features some smooth, intoxicating beats provided by Mylo MU, which perfectly complement brz’s distinctive, hooky flow and whimsical delivery. On “Paradise, BRZ raps about going a little stir crazy while being shuttered indoors, commenting on how the days bleed into one another, making it seem like you’re like walking around “In a daze, in a maze” and starting to feel “catatonic.” His rhymes are eventually modulated through a cool distorted effect that makes it sound like he’s harmonizing with himself, and it makes the final verse sound absolutely killer: “I’ll call you up let’s make a mess / This in-between we in duress /I know that it’s way more than sex / But your touch like a vinyl press.” That vinyl reference is probably my favorite, for obvious reasons.
The video, which was directed by Keenan Rhodes, is inspired by Tokyo Ghoul, an anime series. In the series, beings known as “ghouls” consume humans for sustenance, and through the video, brz juxtaposes this idea with the smooth sonics of “Paradise.” The video begins with a shot of brz sipping a cup of tea in dimly lit room before his focus shifts to a package on the table where he’s seated. He picks it up and then slinks along outside, before collapsing under a bridge as the color scheme shifts to dark red. The scene then changes to a multi-screen split, capturing shots of BRZ from multiple perspectives.
