The Big Net - "Bird"
We’re excited to premiere the video for “Bird,” the latest single from New York City indie-folk trio, The Big Net. The song is the closing track off of the band’s debut full-length, In the Service of Song, which is scheduled for release on January 15th via Marbled Arm Records.
“Bird” is a comforting song that’s characterized by velvety guitar tones and soft vocals that, in combination, feel quite therapeutic. Through his words, principal songwriter Kevin Copeland attempts to bring solace to a friend going through a challenging time. His featherlight melodies flow soothingly from his delicate guitar playing and serene voice, conveying a sense of calm. Building off its idyllic mood, the song slowly swells as it progresses, with guitars that sift and simmer in a way that’s reminiscent of Duster meets the more subdued moments of Mock Orange or The Jazz June. The song takes a lyrical turn and receives an uptick in guitar swirl in the final verse, where Copeland metaphorically plots his escape: “and I wish that we could fly / into another life / where you don’t have to cry / and friends never die.” Though Copeland originally wrote the song from the first-person perspective of giving comfort to another, in reflecting on it, he found that he himself was one of the unintentional recipients of his own efforts:
I wrote Bird for a friend who was having a hard time, though I still don't know if they know it's for them. I just wanted to tell them somehow that it was going to be ok. But when I listened back for the first time after tracking, so much had changed in my own life, that it felt like I was talking to myself. A different Me telling me that I was going to be alright. It's a very comforting song, almost a lullaby. I think we could all use some of that right now.
The video for the song is equally pacifying and in a way, very mesmeric, as it follows a train traveling along the picturesque snow-covered Norwegian countryside. There’s just something very tranquil about taking in a scenic wintery landscape from the hypnotic viewpoint of a moving train. If life is getting to you and you’re feeling stressed out, pop your headphones in and play this video. It’ll be sure to put you at ease.
