MPHO - "No Breakfast With Andy"
We’re super excited to premiere “No Breakfast With Andy,” the latest single from Brooklyn’s MPHO. The group, which is made of multidisciplinary artists Holly Overton, Mark Perro, and Russell Hymowitz, has operated as a side project to their other creative endeavors since 2015, releasing some great tunes and gigging sporadically over the last half dozen years. In 2021, they’re aiming to make a comeback with an avant-garde pop tune that’s endearingly off-kilter and simultaneously sleek.
I’d categorize “No Breakfast With Andy” as art-punk in its sensibilities, but it’s definitely much smoother and soulful in its approach. The song glides along and goes down quite easily thanks to the combination of Perro’s airy synth playing and Overton’s warm melodies, which shine brightly throughout. The track has a lounge-vibe to it or what I’d even characterize as a more laid-back version of sophistipop, as listening to the synth-centric track is very relaxing. It’s perfect Sunday morning listening. In addition to the three principal members, the track features Jon "Catfish" Delorme (Psychic Ills, ZZZ Walk) on table steel and Adam Amram (Psychic Ills, ZZZ Walk) on drums. And if you’re curious about the title, it reflects the song’s lyrics, which were inspired by sentiments expressed in Andy Warhol’s 1975 book, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.
The band also shared a video to accompany the song, which takes place in a vintage-looking kitchen with a bright mid-century modern color palette. Experimental filmmaker and Warhol enthusiast, Joe Wakeman, directed and shot it in home video quality in reference to the mundane and domestic kitsch of the 1970’s satirical soap opera, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. All three MPHO members play a role in it - Overton cooks and serves some delicious looking over-easy eggs, Hymowitz comes in to do some handy work with a wrench, and Perro reads a newspaper with a bunch of bizarre headlines like “Van Gogh Lives,” “Mayor Puts Bounty On Rats,” and my personal favorite, “Nessie Spotted On Hudson.” Honestly, stranger things have happened in this city!
