Drug Couple - "If I Were A Carpenter"
We’re excited to premiere Drug Couple’s cover of “If I Were A Carpenter.” Originally performed by Johnny Cash and June Carter, the Brooklyn band’s take on this classic love song arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day, and provides just the right amount of tender vibes to get you in the spirit for this Hallmark holiday. The duo, which is made up of real-life couple Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Becca Chodorkoff Robinson, bring the strength of their own special connection and bond to their rendition by mixing in their trademark impassioned vocal interplay, which definitely benefits from their very genuine feelings for one another. In advance of the release, the two shared a few words about the song, love, and life in general:
Becca: “We've been covering this song for a long time, but the hook of 'would you marry me anyways?' definitely took on more meaning this year—we got married in August, and because of the pandemic we ended up totally rethinking the whole thing, postponing the big wedding celebration we had planned, and paring town to a small ceremony with just our families and very best friends...it was like: ‘hell yes I'll marry you anyways...I'll marry you if the whole world gets turned upside down. Especially if the whole world gets turned upside down.’ At the end of the day, love is really the best thing we can (or should) hold onto. Love and fresh air and music and dogs. Everything else can eat it.”
Miles: “I am super into my wife and being married to a bass player rules. I’m very thankful to this song for helping me wage a multi-year propaganda campaign in support of marriage. I’m thankful for my friends Jason and Molly of Acrylics who turned me onto this song when they had me sing it at their wedding reception….also we are not pregnant Mom, please calm down."
