Overhand Sam - "Pebbles"

We’re excited to premiere “Pebbles,” the brand new single from Rochester, New York’s Overhand Sam. The project of songwriter Sam Snyder traverses in a sound that nicely exists somewhere between psych-pop and garage rock, and he demonstrates just how pleasant this combination can be on his latest track. On “Pebbles,” Snyder lets a slight undercurrent of fuzz lead the way and it helps propel the track to some far-out, stratospheric heights. Early on, the interaction between the guitars and bass is quite unique, as the riffs sound straight up Byrdsian, while the muscular bass exudes more of a soulful bravado. While invoking a clever metaphor that compares having pebbles in your shoes to feelings of self-doubt, he also lets his guitar get in some words edgewise, especially around the choruses, where they slowly start to sound a little more menacing - thus establishing a nice contrast with the sedative quality of his voice. Snyder also incorporates a lot of different experimental sonic flourishes without compromising the song’s pleasing melody. Towards the end of the song, the guitars and drums go off the rails after his voice trails off, and then, both cut out abruptly to make room for a faint-sounding piano solo. The song is quite the trip!
