David Wilson and the Summer Husbands - "David Wilson and the Summer Husbands"

We’re excited to premiere the brand new self-titled EP from David Wilson and the Summer Husbands, which is out today via New Jersey’s Pyrrhic Victory Recordings. The new project of songwriter David Wilson originally started due to a unique set of unplanned circumstances. His other band, Miss Ohio, was scheduled to play a gig but had to drop off the bill about a month before the scheduled date. Undeterred, Wilson rounded up his Miss Ohio bandmate Ed Roessler to play bass and his friend Paul Sherrard to play drums, and the three commenced a series of marathon songwriting sessions over the course of the following 30 days.

Today, we’re getting to hear some of the songs conceived during that condensed, but fruitful period, and they’re gorgeous, gentle tunes that sound like a cross between Sparklehorse and Wilco. The opening track, “1983,” traffics in sweet nostalgia, mixing saccharine harmonies, soothing synths, and a nice balance of clean and verby guitar tones. “Evangeline” has more of an Americana feel with a brass section that helps brings its love-lorn lyrics to life. Wilson’s voice has a warm-hearted, almost Wayne Coyne-esque feel to it on this one, and this coziness carries over into the latter half of the EP, starting with the more country-sounding “Austin.” The collection ends with “My Friends,” an intimate and authentic ballad that ruminates on friendships and companionship against a backdrop of twinkling guitars.
