Mary Shelley - "Bloodhounds"
Mary Shelley’s second LP, Bloodhounds, is out today and it’s been a long time coming. They recorded the full-length last spring between two Brooklyn studios: La Fam and Studio G. Since then, they’ve treated us to three singles previewing the next phase of their sonic evolution. “Goin’ To The Beach,” the lead single, proved that the quartet’s sound is as expansive as it is lively, as they concocted an up-tempo, heel stompin’, summer dance anthem that drew influence from legendary proto and post-punks. “She’s A Star,” the album’s second offering was more menacing and ominous, showcasing the band’s ability to be chameleonic when it comes to capturing moods. The album’s final single, “You Look Just Like My Mother,” saw them further perfecting their bread and butter: angular, fierce, shout-along rock and roll. Today, the balance of the record is out in the world, and it’s full of more treats and treasures.
Bloodhounds is a perfectly sequenced seven-track affair with peaks, valleys, surprises, and sharp turns. The record starts on the beach with the aforementioned “Goin’ To The Beach,” before descending to some darker depths on “Bloodhounds,” an up-stroked guitar-driven track with a sultry, ska-influenced rhythm. “You Look Just Like My Mother” gives way to “… Through The Ivory Gate,” a chaotic interstitial, before “Odyssey,” a song that steadily strings listeners along to a cacophonous explosion of guitars, bass, and drums at the three-minute mark. In a press release, the band shared that the album “starts at the beach” and “ends in the casket.” Sure enough, the closing track “Piggies” is straight-up hellish.
