The Roulettes - “Batter Up”

The Roulettes - “Batter Up”

The history of The Roulettes goes back two decades and spans the length of the country. The project, which is currently comprised of singer/guitarist Rebecca Keith, drummer Rachel Hass, and bassist Alice Danger, formed way back in 2002 at Oberlin College. The band then spent some time in Portland before settling in New York City. They’ve been active on and off over the last few years, gigging across the city, and slowly but surely putting together the follow-up to their 2004 self-titled debut. Their long-awaited sophomore release, Mommy Comes Back, is now on the horizon. Today, we’re excited to premiere their first single in 20 years, “Batter Up.”

“Batter Up” nicely blends multiple sounds and styles into a fun and energetic three minutes of music. Kicking off with a hypnotic and meandering surf-infused riff, frontperson Rebecca Keith’s roaring vocals jump to the forefront after a brief, but compelling intro. “I won’t see you again,” she defiantly sings, gaining intensity with each utterance and creating a palpable tension that builds as the song progresses. The trio adds a sprinkle of sugar to the mix in the form of some call-and-response vocals, before transitioning to the gang-styled sung refrain of “batter up,” which ends the song with several exclamation points.
